The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich by Timothy Ferriss is a fascinating book by a Princeton lecturer who has found and put to use a number of secrets for living in the now, and not waiting for retirement to enjoy relaxation. Its strategies include how to retrain your supervisors into putting a higher value on results and production than actual presence, and how to trade a full time career for several short “work bursts” sprinkled with mini-retirements. However, the home business still has a black eye because of multiple multi-level-marketing companies that have ripped off thousands of investors in the past. Furthermore, many unfamiliar with the home business have this hokey picture of adults staying in pajamas until mid-afternoon and conducting business whenever they feel like it. The home business must work hard to establish and maintain the same professionalism as their competitors in the traditional business world. The traditional business has stable, posted hours. When the business says "Open from 8am to 5pm," someone is there from 8am until 5pm. In a small town in the Midwest, a great coffee shop with multi-cultural tones opened and was an immediate success. Patrons flocked because of the intriguing ambiance and great coffee and food. However, the owners lacked commitment. Often they would close the shop in the middle of the day to go fishing or shopping for the afternoon. When the locals would show up at 3 pm, the doors with no posted hours would be locked the lights off. You can only guess what happened to that business. Patrons stopped patronizing it. No one trusts a business that does not follow their posted hours or even have posted hours. Thus a home business can prove its legitimacy with posted hours that the owners follow. Secondly, In the traditional business, exudes professionalism. Individuals dress appropriately. For example, the newspaper editor of the small town may wear jeans and a polo shirt, but note how he's not wearing gym shorts and a t-shirt. We do not expect the bank to be open on Labor Day, Christmas, Thanksgiving, or Memorial Day. These businesses will post when they will take off the negotiable holidays, such as good Friday or the day after Thanksgiving. Home businesses must do the same. We can definitely take vacations, but we should do so at appropriate times, and let our clients know that we will not be answering the phone or conducting business on those days. The home business must strive to mimic the same professionalism that the traditional business exudes. However, the home business owner must do this on purpose, and he may have unique challenges, such as children in the home as he's working or the interruption of home repairs like a backed up toilet or broken water line in the kitchen. Whenever possible, the home business owner should conduct business in a professional manner. This means keeping regular hours, dressing appropriately, and even taking breaks to keep his sanity on those appropriate holidays.
